Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Open-Cell Spray Foam For Your Home

Having your home at a comfortable temperature regardless of the season is important to most homeowners. However, in these days of rising energy costs, many homeowners are finding it is too expensive to keep their homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Michigan residents often feel particularly challenged when confronted with harsh winters and the humidity that comes with summer heat. One of the most effective tools in a homeowner’s battle with the weather is proper insulation. If you need to insulate the attic or walls of your home, open-cell spray foam is a safe and durable choice. Our foam insulation experts have the tools needed to install your home’s new insulation with professional results.

What is It?

Open-cell spray foam insulation is an expanding foam insulation. Because of the expanding nature of this insulation the foam seals off air leaks that loose-fill insulation often misses. It can also provide a substantial reduction in energy costs while making your home more comfortable. Many homeowners find that a single application of spray-foam results in energy savings of as much as 50 percent.

This open-cell product expands by as much as 120 times to fill any gaps and seal any cracks in just one application. It will not deteriorate, sag, or settle, meaning that it will continue to provide excellent insulation for many years to come.

How Does it Work?

Spray foam is an insulant that works to limit the conduction or heat transfer, of your home. In colder months insulation helps to trap heat inside the home, while also easing the burden on your AC in the warmer seasons. Another benefit of spray foam is the way it air-seals your home. Any small gaps in your home can allow for air leakage that can make your insulation far less efficient, but our expanding spray foam will work to prevent air flow out of your home.

What is the R value of open-cell spray foam?

Pro Grade Open-Cell Spray Foam is an excellent option for homeowners looking to increase their home’s R-value while avoiding excessive material usage. This material is more porous than our closed cell variety and does not provide a vapor barrier which means that installation may require an additional vapor barrier. The R-value for open-cell is 3.8 per inch.

What should I expect during installation?

All in all, the process of having spray foam insulation installed does not take long. However, due to the toxic nature of some of the fumes created while the spray foam is expanding you must leave your home vacant for at least 24 hours from the time our crews finish the installation.

Does open-cell spray foam need a vapor barrier?

Yes, open-cell insualtion should always be installed with a vapor barrier. Since this product is less dense than other forms of foam insulation it is vulnerable to moisture and retaining water. This can eventually lead to the growth of mold.
