What to expect with attic insulation installation

While most home improvement projects can improve a home’s aesthetics, insulation contributes to short term and long term cost savings. Moreover, while many people prefer to hire a general contractor for attic insulation installation, you can get the best outcome if you hire a proficient insulation contractor to handle the project.

What to expect with attic insulation installation

Before Install: Full Attic Inspection

Your attic should go through a full inspection before any work is done or agreed on. One of our Pro experts will judge the state of your attic’s ventilation and insulation.

The goal of an inspection is to give a fair and accurate estimate of your home’s needs. All costs and needs will be included in the estimate, from what kind of insulation to use to how much should be installed. This way the full cost of the job can be in the quote.

Phases of Attic Insulation Installation

Phase 1: Removal

One critical aspect of an insulation project that most contractors often overlook is the removal of old and defective insulation. The process of removing existing insulation requires expertise since it can pose a broad range of hazards. In case your home has some harmful materials such as asbestos, it is critical to hire professionals like the experts at Pro Home Improvement to handle the project. This is also when our contractors will lay down protective tarps and materials to keep the rest of your home from getting damaged during removal/installation.

Phase 2: Preparing The Attic

Before the installation of new materials can begin we will make sure that your attic is in the best shape possible. This includes installing vapor barriers to prevent the growth of mold or mildew in your attic. Our crew will also install baffles along the walls/ceiling of your attic in order to ensure proper ventilation. These baffles will help to keep air flowing behind and throughout your insulation so that there is no possibility of trapped air.

Phase 3: Installing The Insulation

The installation phase will vary depending on what type of insulation you are having installed.

Blown In

With blown in (loose fill) insulation, we will run a large hose into your attic from our truck outside. A blower machine in the truck will then break up the insulation and send it running through the hose into your attic. The installer will direct the hose in a way that makes sure a level layer of insulation is placed onto your attic floor.

Batt

With batt insulation, our crew will bring the large sections of insulation up into your attic. Once there the insulant will be measured and cut to size and fitted between your floor joists. Once these joists have all been filled an additional layer may be added on top to ensure proper coverage. Alternatively, batt insulation may be nailed up between the rafters rather than laid out on the floor.

Spray Foam

As with blown in insulation spray foam utilizes hoses during installation. These hoses will be smaller than the blown in type and will work in unison to mix and apply the insulant allowing it to cover and expand onto the surface of your attic. Generally, spray foam is applied to the walls and ceiling of your attic rather than the floor. Due to the toxic fumes present during installation, it is recommended that your home stay vacant for a full 24 hours after installation.
